The Formal Gardens
A formal garden design, so popular in Tudor times and in the Georgian era, are also well suited to modern buildings and public spaces.

Their geometric style provides a sense of order and allows for symmetrical planting that can be very pleasing.

Although their formality can look rather stark when first planted, nature soon takes over and your plants grow on quickly to soften the straight lines and fill the space!

On the left is the plan for the garden above, first planted in 1997.

The paths are lined with the traditional box hedging, which will soon become established, while other plants already look well settled.

Formal gardens may appear to need considerable maintenance but that's not always the case!

Depending on the plants you choose, a formal garden can give much pleasure and be very easy to keep, looking it's best all through the year.

This is a similar formal design, designed and landscaped by Garden Affairs in 2002.

We used a different form of trellis here, which can give a slightly less formal appearance to the garden when covered in climbing plants.

We also frequently use a variety of trellis to provide sheltered arbors which can add a formal touch to any garden.
