The Community Garden

How is it done? -
This example shows the design plan for a Community Garden in the village of Granthouse in the Scottish Borders.
Built in 2005, it included a Play Area for children, shrubs, trees and a raised bed with scented plants close to a seating area.

See the plan produced and the different stages of development involved to create the garden

<The garden's Play area

First Stage: T.K. and Sheila visit the site and discuss with the client(s) how they would like the garden to be, including the features required, the plants and trees they would like to include and the work and maintenance that will be required to achieve it. All this information is noted with careful attention to the time scale allowed and the budget available.

Second Stage: T.K. produces a plan for the client's approval. Any alteration/additions can be made at this stage. (see example below)

Third Stage: The landscaping work commences and the features are installed and then the plants and trees are ordered.

Fourth Stage: The planting. This is one of Sheila's favourite tasks and usually the client's too! The garden really starts to take shape and it's easy to see the full picture emerging.

Fifth Stage:  One of the most interesting aspects of a garden are the changes through the seasons and over time.

There are many possibilities for a community garden, including a play area for children, quiet areas to sit and chat with friends, sheltered picnic areas and shaded reading corners. Sculptures or raised beds add interest and when planted with sensory plants the latter add enjoyment for partially sighted or disabled.
